Friends Object to MPCA’s Draft Landfill Siting Rules

(December 10, 2009) The Friends of Washington County today delivered to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) its response to the Informal Draft Landfill Siting Rule Language and Rationale published by the MPCA on November 30. The Friends’ response also was delivered to the MPCA at a public meeting held on December 7 for that purpose.

St. Croix Boom Site

A new organization, the Friends of the St. Croix Boom Site,  is now working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on both short- and long-term management issues relating to the historic St. Croix Boom Site. As many St. Croix Valley residents know, the Boom Site was closed to the public by the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 2006. Thanks to the efforts of this vocal group, the site was re-opened to the public in 2007 and its management was passed to the DNR  in 2008.

Land & Water Legacy

The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted on December 15, 2009, to include debt service on Land and Water Legacy bonds in its 2010 budget, thus enabling the county to issue bonds in 2010 as the need arises. The Friends of Washington County wish to thank the Board for its action, and celebrate the potential for very substantial progress of this program in 2010.
